Good times at the K-W Hydrocut trails

Wow.

Just got back from the Hydrocut, a gorgeous xc/freeride trail at the south end of Kitchener, Ontario. I went with a couple o friends. Of course, as happens on all such outings, we got rained on. Still, we soldiered on, and dressed  for the occasion. Lucky for us, the area the terain has a sandy texture on the surface, and so it was not overly greasy. I took a totally grace-free tumble over the bars at one of the downhill corners on the trail, which had my riding partner and I in stitches of laughter. Good times. He went over the bars too, but I wasn't present to return the favour and laugh at his misfortune. a couple scrapes, and perhaps a bruise or two. Needless to say, we got thoroughly filthy. Having opted to carry the cell phone in case of emergency over the camera as pocket filler, I snapped a few frames after we finished  the ride , back at the van. Many thanks to those who made this trip possible, including Simon, our tourguide, and Adrian, who helped to keep me awake on the drive home. Hope to see you riding  again soon, Simon.

Can you tell i wore a raincoat?
looks like I sullied me nappies.

1999 Klein Mantra frame
So this frame in its time was groundbreaking. back in the mid-late 90s, when front and rear suspensions were in their infancy, Gary Klein had this genius idea to move the pivot up to the top of the bike. Essentially the intention was to do all of the suspension work with one suspension element and one pivot, although the production bikes ended up with front and rear shocks.

What my bike will look like
So I'm building a bike. No small feat for me, as I'm pretty new to the biking realm, or should I say, newly re-converted.   I was on a bike for much of my childhood, and virtually inseparable from that old blue Supercycle i inherited from my big sister when I was 5.  Last summer, on a dare, i went mountain biking witha friend, and it was love at first ride. Cross country. I immediately got to work scanning classifieds looking for something I couldn't damage, and that wouldn't damage my budget. Craigslist yielded a 20$ bike, or at least most of one. Admittedly It need a fair amount of TLC, but it was a real learning experience. after 30 bucks worth of parts (brakes and a bottom bracket), and a lot of tinkering, I had a bike.

It was a 21-speed Gary fisher Tarpon. Nothing to write home about, but a sturdy steed, all steel, but fairly light for its vintage and for being an XL frame. This has been my starter bike. I have had it for nine months while i build something more interesting.
